Louse pitched a gem, going 81/3 innings giving up just one earned run. That run came in the 9th inning of a Jim Edmonds single, to bring in Pujols who had just doubled. The reds first scored in the 4th inning. Griffey got a solo homer, his 13th of the year and 576th of his career. That was followed by an Edwin Encarnacion 2 run blast which was his 4th of the year. In the 6th, Adam Dunn hit his 15th homerun of the year. The homerun was a solo shot, that was hit opposite field into the reds bullpen. The last reds run came in the 8th, when EE singled in Phillips. All of that scoring resulted in a reds 5-1 win, as previously mentioned.
Here our some notes and observations on the game:
- Josh Hamilton showed up his cannon of an arm by throwing out Aaron Miles in the 6th inning to complete a double play. That arm is clearly the best among the reds outfielders, and it will help the reds in close games. He was 1-3 at the plate with a single and an intentional walk.
- Edwin Encarnacion is on fire. Tonight he went 4 for 4 with the homer, a double, and 2 singles. All of this resulted in 3 RBI's. I think that he should be put in the 4 or 5 hole, because he is by far the hottest hitter on the reds right now. His batting average is up to .288 after tonight. That trip to Louisville has seemed to do wonders for Edwin, who is hitting the cover of the ball.
- Scott Hatteberg struggled in the lead off spot tonight, going 0 for 5. He just did not look like his usually disciplined self. An example of this is how he popped out out to 2B in the 9th inning with David Ross on 3rd base with 1 out. He almost always gets that runner in with less than 2 outs.
- Kyle Louse had a great game, going 81/3 innings, giving up 1 earned run and 7 hits. He only walked one person, and was throwing 1st pitch strikes to the high majority of batters. Louse really has great stuff, he just needs to be focused and attack hitters. His line: 81/3 IP, 7 hits, one earned run, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts. It brought his ERA down to 4.22.
- The 8th inning did not let up any runs tonight, as it has all too often this year. Juan Encarnacion singled, then Adam Kennedy grounded into a fielders choice. Gary Bennett then doubled to the right field corner, but Kennedy held up at 3rd base, even though I thought that he could make it home. But, Aaron Miles than flied out to right field, and Scott Spiezeo then grounded out to Brandon Phillips. Louse adverted a big inning which he has been very prone to so far this year.
- The 9th inning kind of gave me a scare. It started by Chris Duncan stricking out, with Louse still looking for the complete game shut-out. Albert Pujols than doubled of Griffey's glove, who made a jumping attempt to catch it against the top part of the wall. Jim Edmonds then singled to score Pujols and give the cardinals their first run of the game. At that point David Weathers came in. He started by giving up a single to Scott Rolen. But, he settled down and got Scott Rolen to pop out to Scott Hatteberg, and then Hatteberg made a nice play to rob Kennedy if a base hit. Even though the tying run never actually came to the plate, the 9th inning still had too much drama for me.
Position Grades:
Offense: B+- They got some clutch hits. EE came up gib with 4 hits and 3 RBI's, and Dunn and Griffey both hit solo homers.
Defense: A- They made every routine play, including 2 double plays, which were Hamilton doubling off Miles after a catch in center field, and Castro getting a ground ball.
Starting Pitching: A+- Louse was very close to getting a complete game shut-out. Even though he didn't get it, he still gave the tired bullpen rest and pitched 8 very good innings.
Bullpen: A- Weathers came in and did his job bringing his ERA to 3.86, although he did give up a hit and a near hit if not for Hatteberg's good play.
Managing: A+- Jerry Narron actually managed a good game. I thought he handled Louse well, leaving him in for the 9th and taking him out for Weathers when he looked tired and giving up hits. Also made some good steals and hit and runs to advert double play and advance the runner. Nice job Jerry.
So thats it. Hopefully Alex Gonzalez can go tomorrow against the Indians. It will be Homer Bailey's first MLB start against Cliff Lee. Can't wait for that one.
The 5-1 win over the cardinals puts an end to the ugly 3 game series with St. Louis. The reds lost the first 2, but salvaged a win tonight. The win brings them up to 23-38, 10.5 behind the Milwaukee Brewers for first place. It's not completely over yet. See ya for Homer's first start. Until then, have a good night or morning.
